Goats are subject to a variety of internal parasites and it is vital to your goat's health to check for parasites often so you can identify and treat for anything above normal healthy numbers.
Coccidiosis is a common threat to young goats, and occasionally adult goats too. It is very important to give a preventive and test the young ones for coccidia often.
Barberpole worms are a common threat to all goats here in South Florida, and should have their feces checked for parasite eggs at least quarterly.
DO NOT EVER administer a wormer to a goat without knowing the specific parasite and exact parasite load you are dealing with. Randomly administering wormers can cause more harm than good to your herd. Some goats are naturally resistant to some parasites and some are naturally susceptible to them.
Parasite resistance to many popular drugs is a huge problem.
Please do not contribute to parasite resistance by randomly administering wormers.
Because of the importance of regular testing, I now offer testing for other goat owners in our area. I do this on a regular basis and charge just $10 per goat. I typically host a "Fecal Friday" once a month where you can drop off or mail in samples to be tested. Contact me for more info.
