We strongly feel that mineral supplements are a must for the health of our goats. Loose minerals are the way to go. The mineral blocks you get from the feed store are not really sufficient for what our goats need in our area. Because of this, high quality loose minerals are our preferred choice. After trying many brands of loose minerals, we feel that "Sweetlix Brand 16-8 Meat Maker" works the best for us here. Not only does the mineral need to be very high quality, but more importantly your goat has to like the taste and want to eat it regularly. The Sweetlix 16-8 Meat Maker is our goat's favorite to eat and our favorite because of the ingredients. It's a win/win.
We also provide a feeder full of Baking Soda for the goats to eat as they feel needed to balance gut PH.
We built our mineral and baking soda feeders out of 3" PVC pipes. They are placed inside the barn so that no rain can get into them. The goats love it. There are lots of plans online on how to make these if you google it. Pinterest is a great source.
Here is what the Sweetlix minerals look like. We prefer to put them into PVC dispensers so that the goats have access 24/7. They will consume them as needed. We actually see our bottle babies enjoying the minerals at a very young age too.
Here is a photo of what we use. You can order it online at different supply houses like Jefferspet.com, or get it locally in Naples at Golden Gate Nursery.
Along with free choice minerals, we offer our goats free choice baking soda. This allows the goats to consume as much or as little as they need. Baking soda helps keep the rumen's pH in balance and helps aid in digestion.
