For our girls, I like to find the greenest and freshest hay available, with the highest amount of nutrients and protein. Orchard & Alfalfa (O&A) and Perennial Peanut are our typical "go to" hays for our goats.
We supply our goats with unlimited hay, offered free choice from feeders inside the barn. This way the hay stays fresh and dry at all times. And they do waste a lot, so the barn gets a nice coat of fresh bedding constantly.
Be careful when choosing hay for your bucks, especially wethered bucks. Unlike does, wethered bucks are very susceptible to Urinary Calculi (urinary stones). Their entire diet should be based on the correct Calcium:Phosphorus ratio of 2:1. Timothy hay without any alfalfa generally falls into this correct 2:1 ratio.
There is a ton of info on the internet explaining Urinary Calculi in goats so we recommend you research this thoroughly to avoid a potential lethal and heartbreaking situation.
